Jonathan is a fish out of water.
He has sailed all his life, from the family's Wayfarer
as a child, his father's Contessa 26 to his current 11.5 meter Jeanneau Selection
One Design, a former Tour de France a la Voile yacht
at Queen City Yacht Club.
He has sailed many 'round the
cans' races but it is the lure of long distance race that
has always embodied
his
love of the sea. Whether it is sailing off the Grand
Banks off Newfoundland on the way to Saint Pierre
et Miquelon,
a regatta in Cape town South Africa or in the around
the Isle of Wight race in England, long distance
sailing is
where he comes into his own. His background as an Industrial
Designer gives him a unique competitive edge as he
applies his meticulous attention to detail to all aspects
of
the yacht from mechanical preparation, safety, through
to sail
trim and weather routing. Jonathan is fiercely competitive. " I
believe that mental and physical preparation are essential
to these types of long distance endurance races. Diet among
other things is critical to sustain the body and mind which
is constantly being challenged by sleep deprivation and
full on physical stress". “ I love sailing in
big weather, it’s like down hill mogul skiing - your
going fast on the verge of being out of control and each
wave is a new challenge – you have to think fast
to keep the boat on its feet…”
